A Register of Trees, Co. Cork 1790-1860 Until the mid-eighteenth century there was little incentive for a tenant to plant trees on his leased land for the trees were legally the property of the landlord. However, between 1721 and 1765 by a series of parliamentary acts the tenant's position in this matter was progressively improved so that by the latter date he was entitled to all the trees he had planted, or their value, on the expiration of his lease. To prove his ownership it was necessary for him to register the trees, within a year of planting, with the clerk of the peace for the county. TThese ledgers, entitled A Register of Trees, have survived for thirteen counties. –By Donal P. McCracken and Eileen McCracken Journal of the Cork Archaeological and Historical Society Vol. LXXXI, 1976

Bernard MacMahon was born in Ireland c. 1775. He moved to Philadelphia in 1796 and established a seedhouse and nursery business, producing the first seed catalogue published in the US. It is a landmark index to the plants introduced and cultivated in the United States at that time. He has been described as Thomas Jefferson’s gardening mentor; and his classic work, The American Gardener’s Calendar (1806), as Jefferson’s horticultural "Bible." Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia
Birding in Ireland Although it possesses fewer breeding species than neighbouring countries, Ireland has relatively healthy populations of some that are in serious decline elsewhere in Europe, such as Roseate Tern and Corncrake. It also has some of the largest breeding seabird colonies in the world, huge flocks of wintering waders and wildfowl, dramatic seabird passage and a host of rare and unusual migrants. Birds Ireland
Birdwatch Ireland is involved in a wide range of conservation work, including a number of survey and research projects, applied conservation projects, and the development and advocacy of policies in relation to issues of importance for the conservation of birds and their habitats in Ireland. This information forms a basis for the legal framework for the protection of Ireland’s birds. Birdwatch Ireland
The Flora of Ireland Ireland has a comparatively small flora for a European country, partly this is due to the fact that it is not a large country, and geologically not very varied, but a major factor is that ice-sheets covered much of Ireland until 13,000 years ago. The majority of our flora and fauna has only returned as the ice sheets retreated. National Botanic Gardens of Ireland
The Golden Eagle Returns Following many years of pre-project planning, the Golden Eagle project started in earnest in 1999, when the Irish Raptor Study Group and the Curlew Trust Limited agreed that they would combine their resources and energies in a new joint venture and would work with DĂșchas (now the National Parks and Wildlife Service) and the Scottish authorities with a view to implementing the Irish Golden Eagle Reintroduction project proposal.
